    Interactive toolKangaroo Island, SA

How much does a trip to Kangaroo Island actually cost? This free calculator turns the four things that really drive your budget — how you reach the island, where you sleep, how you eat and how many paid experiences you add — into an indicative AUD range tailored to your party. All figures are planning bands, not quotes.

Kangaroo Island is the third-largest island in Australia and sits a short stretch of water south of Adelaide. Because almost everything — fuel, food, accommodation and transport — has to come across Backstairs Passage on the SeaLink ferry or via the small regional airport at Kingscote, prices on the island skew a little higher than comparable mainland regions. The biggest single line items in most KI budgets are the transport-to-the-island cost (ferry with a vehicle, or flights plus hire car) and accommodation, with food and activities making up the rest.

Use the controls below to set your trip length, group size, accommodation tier, how you'll travel, and how busy you want your days to be. The output is presented as a low–high range so you can plan honestly rather than fixate on a single number. When you're ready to book, always verify the current price directly with SeaLink, your airline, your hire-car company and individual tour operators.

    How we built these ranges

Each cost band reflects current public planning information for 2026 KI travel and is deliberately presented as a low–high range rather than a single number. Transport bands cover the SeaLink return passenger and vehicle fares (or regional flights to Kingscote) plus a few days of small-to-mid car hire on the island. Accommodation uses the per-night tier rate you set — edit it to match the exact listing you're looking at. Food assumes a mix of self-catering and casual dining; activities scale with how much you want to pack in, including indicative park passes for Flinders Chase National Park and Seal Bay Conservation Park. Nothing here is a quote.

Ways to bring the number down

The biggest single lever is timing — travelling in shoulder seasons (late autumn or early spring), midweek where possible, and booking ferry crossings well ahead almost always beats peak-summer walk-up rates. Bringing your own car on the ferry is usually cheaper than flying and hiring once your stay stretches past two or three nights. Self-catering even half your meals from the Kingscote or Penneshaw IGAs makes a noticeable dent, and free experiences — beaches, walking trails, lookouts, the Cape Willoughby and Cape du Couedic coastlines — are some of the most memorable parts of any KI trip anyway.
